That is a font that I hand drew and designed myself! Get off the computer and back to the analog! It’s more creative and usually leads to way better results in the end!

I’m Murphy Welch. I play guitar in So Many Ways. This is what Jason Milbank, fellow guitarist, and myself have been doing for the past 12 days. I’m mainly doing this so I don’t have to explain it a thousand times.

January 7th 6:17 PM - So Many Ways’ van breaks down on the side of the road about 30 miles outside of Columbus.

This is where it all starts. With Colin Corely the singer of SMW at the helm, our van, affectionately named “Jim” after its original owner, made some unpleasant noises slowed to a stop on route 71 heading south to our first show with Latin for Truth. We were starting a three week east coast tour with them. I have a AAA membership so I call them up and we take the multiple trips to get everyone including Jim himself to my friend Ryan’s parent’s house just outside Columbus. At this point the van is definitely out of commission but we’re optimistic, Ryan’s dad is a mechanic and can take a look at the van in the morning, this can be potentially fixed, we might lose a couple days but we can do this. We make it to the basement show that is scheduled for the night with some help from our friends and we play a pretty damn fun show with LFT, drink a few beers, we have a place to stay with our friends Ryan and Savanah, things are okay.

The next morning Ryan calls me and his dad tells us that the engine is dead. We believe him but still think that we might be able to get a replacement engine and thus basically have a van that will run for longer. This will be costly for sure, but potentially worth it. I call Goodyear right down the street and we bring the van in the next day after sleeping at Ryan’s house. We use Ryan’s car to go to see a movie to take our minds off the wondering and waiting, and I get a call in the middle of it. The lowest price he can give me is $6,000. Tour is over. Everyone is disappointed.

We all go back to Ryan’s and figure out what to do with the van, as well as a way to get everyone home and still play the show we have scheduled for Kent Ohio since I am originally from very near there. We decide the van will be scrapped, it will take too long to sell it or part it out. Jason rents a U-Haul for the next day, we load up the U-Haul, he and I cruise back to my house in Macedonia Ohio, a 2 hour trip. After unloading all the gear and dropping of the U-Haul I grab my parent’s car and head immediately back to pick everyone else up, 2 hours back to Columbus and 2 hours back from Columbus to my house again. We are now at day 4, January 10th.

After a day of resting at my house we play an awesome show in Kent on Thursday January 12th, a really nice break from the bad news that we’d been getting. Anthony our fill-in bassist for this tour’s band Live It Out came and played and ruled so hard, everyone was pumped that night. We have to get everyone home to Chicago as well as get our gear there somehow, and Jason and I just LOVE driving so we decide to drive the 12 hours to Chicago and back in one day. I don’t really want to have to park my parents car in Chicago, and being home for a night would be such a tease. I kind of wish I could take that decision back right now. Anyway we come back to my house in Ohio in separate cars so we have Jason’s large SUV to haul the gear back and watch football for a few days because of course the junkyard where we’ll be scrapping our dead van isn’t open on the weekend. We head to Columbus again on day 9, Sunday January 15th so that we can wake up on Monday and get this done with.

Awesome, after this we can just go home and sort out how to get a new van and start writing and just be home, maybe drink and try to forget this shitty week. Wait a second do you have your keys? Shit, I forgot the van key in Macedonia. You don’t have your keys? ………. One of the worst moments of my life followed by 4 more hours of driving. Sleep at Ryan’s ONCE AGAIN but we have the key, we can leave tomorrow.

Wait a second where’s the title for the van? You mean it’s not IN the van? Dammit. Scrap place takes the van but won’t give us the money for the van until they have the title. Our roommate Josh back in Chicago can’t find the title. Wait a second YES he found it!!! Okay rad send it to Ryan’s house overnight and we’ll get this done tomorrow, we can leave tomorrow.

Jason and I at this point are beginning to slip into a deep depression. There are about 8 hours of the day where we can get stuff done and the rest of the day is spent waiting and doing ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. We are relieved that we will have the title tomorrow though. This can finally end. Or so we thought…

The next day at 11AM I am patiently waiting for the UPS truck to roll up and hand me the piece of paper that will unlock this jail cell of misery that this situation has become. A few hours and a meal go by and I’m still waiting. A few more hours. Okay fuck this I’m calling them. I can’t get through but Josh our roommate suggests a UPS center to go to to pick this thing up. We go there as fast as possible, all of our stuff with us lets do it lets get this done and leave. UPS place tells me they can’t go get it. We’re pissed. Another night here. God dammit. Fuck. They also say that if Ryan’s name is on the package I can’t pick it up. I go back in and I beg them to find it, I’m desperate. They go back to find it. THEY FIND IT. Ryan’s name is on it… I am immediately running scenarios through my head of me stealing it out of the lady’s hands and big black cops slamming me to the floor. But by some crazy glimmer of good luck among the shit storm of bad luck that we’ve been sailing through the lady rules and fake checks my ID so I can pick up the package. I HAVE THE TITLE, WE CAN LEAVE. Call the scrap place, we’re closed till tomorrow. It’s very fortunate that I don’t own a gun at this point. Someone would have been shot, most likely myself.

So now I am once again sitting in Ryan’s house. My head hurts, I have never been more negative in my entire life. I like to think that I was very centered before this tour attempted to happen. I knew who I was, things worked out usually, I had a good outlook. I don’t feel that way after over 24 total hours of driving and 10 days trying to accomplish literally one thing. I am expecting something horrible to happen tomorrow. I guess you’ll find out if it does, I’ll be sure to tweet about it in all caps.
